Choosing a model agency in Scotland: questions worth asking
For models · 3 November 2026 · 2 min read
The right agency makes a real difference to a modelling career: the work you are put forward for, how fees are negotiated and how you are looked after on set. Before you sign anything, it is worth asking a few direct questions. A good agency will welcome them.
About the work
- What kind of work do you see for me? A good booker can describe the clients and jobs they would put you forward for.
- Who are your clients? Look for brands you recognise and work you can find.
- How do you develop new faces? Tests, castings, advice on digitals and portfolio.
- Do you work outside Scotland? Many brands cast from London, so a presence there helps.
About the agreement
- What is the commission, and is there anything else I pay? You should get a clear answer.
- How long is the agreement, and how can it end? Fair terms on both sides.
- Is it exclusive? Whether you can be represented elsewhere, and where.
About money
- When do I get paid? Usually after the client pays the agency. Our post on how model fees work explains the timing.
- Who negotiates usage? It should be the agency, every time.
- Can I see a sample statement? It shows how fees and commission are set out.
Signs of a good agency
Bookers who know their models well and talk honestly about what is realistic. A small enough roster that you will not be lost. Clear communication, and someone who answers the phone when you need them on a shoot day.
Signs to walk away
Upfront fees to join, pressure to sign immediately, a requirement to buy photoshoots from one supplier, or vague answers about clients and payment. Our guide to spotting modelling scams goes into more detail.
How we work
Tartan Models keeps a deliberately small roster across Edinburgh, Glasgow and London, so every model and every client has our full attention. You can read more about us, or apply and ask us anything at the meeting.
