How to become a model in Scotland
For models · 21 October 2026 · 2 min read
Most people who model in Scotland were not discovered on a street corner. They sent a few honest photos to an agency, met the bookers, and started with test shoots and small jobs. It is a real job with a real process, and the process is simpler than it looks from the outside.
Who agencies are looking for
There is no single look. Brands in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London book models for e-commerce, campaigns, editorial, film and events, and each needs different people. What every booking has in common is reliability: turning up on time, looking like your photos, and being easy to work with on a long day.
Height matters more for fashion and runway than for commercial work. If you are not the classic catwalk height, commercial, e-commerce and lifestyle work may suit you well. We would rather see you and decide together than have you rule yourself out.
At Tartan Models we represent people aged 18 and over.
The photos to send
Agencies want to see you, not a styled version of you. Send a few clear, recent photos taken in daylight:
- A head shot facing the camera, hair off your face
- A profile shot from the side
- A full length shot in fitted clothes, standing straight
- A natural smile, and one without
No filters, no heavy make-up, no group photos. A phone camera near a window is fine. Professional photos are not needed at this stage, so please do not pay for a shoot before you have spoken to an agency.
Your measurements
Have your height, bust or chest, waist, hips and shoe size ready. Measure without shoes and be accurate. Clients book from these numbers, so an extra centimetre here or there causes real problems on set.
What happens after you apply
Our bookers look at every application. If we think there is work for you, we invite you to meet us, take digitals and talk about the kind of jobs that would suit you. If we say not now, it is rarely about how you look. Often the board already has someone similar, or the timing is wrong. You can apply again later.
If we offer representation, you will get a written agreement that sets out how bookings, fees and commission work. Read it properly and ask questions. A good agency will be happy to answer them.
Building experience
New faces usually start with test shoots to build a portfolio, then castings and first bookings. The first months are about learning: how to move for a camera, how a set runs, what clients expect. Most models we work with fit this around study or another job at first.
